Nothing evokes passion and emotion like music, especially music that has been a part of the soundtrack of our lives. These songs that we love from our favorite artists are like snapshots in our family photo album. Each one provides clues to our history, our tragedies, our triumphs and our loves. Music bonds us as a community. And when one of the contributors to our life’s soundtrack dies, we lose a piece of ourselves, a friend who has been “through it all” with us. The heartbreak is shared and the feeling of our own mortality is real. This past year as we have experienced the loss of many in our musical family, I feel strengthened by our shared grief and expression of gratitude. I ask to find comfort together in the music they created for us and remember those times in our lives punctuated in song.
Here’s to a brand new year, brand new music and brand new memories.

“I think a lot of my favorite artists have always done stuff like that,” Deer Tick front man John McCauley says from his home in Nashville, reflecting on his band’s love of unexpected mashups: tender lyrics layered over pi**ed off guitars; classical music flourishes delivered nearly naked and high. Deer Tick’s perfected it all, mostly as an outlier, revered by a legion of fans, respected by peers, but not part of any one scene. With their highly anticipated new project(s), two new albums released simultaneously titled Deer Tick Vol. 1 and Deer Tick Vol. 2, the crew from Rhode Island prove that their punk-roots rock has only gotten better with age. Download “Jumpstarting” off Deer Tick vol. 2 any time between August 14th, and August 20th and learn more about Deer Tick at their Official Website, “Like” them on Facebook and follow them on Twitter.

Ty Segall will release his second self-titled album Friday. “‘Orange Color Queen’ is a love song for my girlfriend, Denée,” Segall says. “I’ve written her many, but I think this is my favorite. I travel around the world for a living and have developed a slight fear of flying. She’s one of the things that makes it better for me to travel. Especially when she is with me. She has orange hair, and is my orange color queen. I rarely write songs like this, because it is so easy to sound disingenuous, but I think this one is pretty good.” Download “Orange Color Queen” off Ty Segall and learn more about Ty Segall at his Official Website, “Like” him on Facebook and follow him on Twitter.

Los Angeles based Warpaint is set to release their third album, Heads Up this Friday (9/23). With all the members focusing more on solo projects, each member was allowed the space, freedom and creativity to write songs on their own. Actually their was only four or five times the whole band was in the recording studio together. This contributed to looser vibes and reduced the creative pressures of making a record. Our first and only glimpse of the album before it’s released is “New Song,” which is a departure from the band’s melancholy sound. But Jenny Lee Lindberg wrote the song after playing a game where each member of the band was tasked with writing a tune immediately after hearing another song. Her choice was Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky.” “I love Nile Rodgers – I love his style,” Lindberg says. “That song made me really happy, so I was like, ‘Okay, well, I’m going to try and put a little Nile Rodgers feel to it.’ His part is like a rhythm guitar, but I’m playing it on the bass. I got a disco beat playing. And so ‘New Song’ sounds nothing like ‘Get Lucky,’ but that’s what I wrote literally after I was given that assignment.” Download “New Song” off Heads Up and learn more about Warpaint at their Official Website, “Like” him on Facebookand follow him on Twitter.

In 2015, Garbage celebrated the 20th anniversary of their debut album with the 20 Years Queer tour. During that tour, drummer Butch Vig announced the band was working on their 6th studio album Strange Little Birds. In many ways, the album goes back to the basics for the group. They worked on the album in Vig’s basement and found that youthful spark that fueled the band’s beginnings. Part of that spark was not having to answer to anyone. This is the second album Garbage has put out on their own label STUNVOLUME and not working with a major record label was liberating. Lead vocalist Shirley Manson calls the album their most vulnerable. “I used to feel so scared, and I think that was why I was so aggressive — but I’m much more willing to admit weaknesses than I was before. Each song addresses different points in my life between me and a person I’ve loved. They’re hot spots in my life, when I was afraid, or vulnerable, or didn’t behave at my best.” Download “Empty” off Strange Little Birds and learn more about Garbage at their Official Website, “Like” them on Facebookand follow them on Twitter.
