The New York Post reported that The Velvet Underground sued the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts for the the use of Warhol’s iconic banana image on products including shoulder bags and iPhone cases. John Cale and Lou Reed claim that the image has become a symbol of their band and the foundation is trying to deceive the public into believing they endorse the products.
Warhol, who acted as the band’s manager and producer, initially received a portion of the band’s album advance for the creation of the illustration. Watch this clip that explores their relationship from a PBS documentary on Andy Warhol.
