Cee-Lo Green of Gnarls Barkley fame probably started the New Year with a headache. On NBC’s New Year’s Eve telecast, Green decided to sing John Lennon’s “Imagine.” Green re-interpreted the lyrics to the iconic song and caused an uproar among some of Lennon’s fans. Green’s edit involved changing the lines, “Nothing to kill or die for and no religion too,” to “Nothing to kill or die for and all religion’s true.”
Green responded to the controversy with a Tweet that he later deleted stating that he meant no disrespect by changing the lyrics and intended to reflect the idea of living in a world where you could believe what you wanted.
What are thoughts on changing lyrics or other elements in cover songs?
