The Worst Songs of the 80’s

12 Comments 14 October 2011

Rolling Stone has published a list of the worst songs of the 80’s. Their list contained the following songs:

1. Starship – ‘We Built This City’
2. Europe – ‘The Final Countdown’
3. Chris De Burgh – ‘Lady In Red’
4. Wham! – ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go’
5. Men Without Hats – ‘The Safety Dance’
6. Falco – ‘Rock Me Amadeus’
7. Bobby McFerrin – ‘Don’t Worry Be Happy’
8. Toni Basil – ‘Mickey’
9. Taco – ‘Puttin’ On The Ritz’
10. Rick Astley – ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’

We at WTTS put our heads together to try to think of some awful 80’s music that fell through the cracks. After much debate, here are the most gimmicky, misguided, cheesy, and downright wrong musical mishaps of the 80’s:

Prince –  “Bat Dance”

Corey Hart –  “Sunglasses at Night”

Queen – “Flash”

USA for Africa – “We Are the World”

Bruce Willis – “Respect Yourself”

Eddie Murphy – “Party All the Time”

…and the worst song of the 80’s is one that was (thankfully) never given a proper release. Brian Wilson recorded a rap song called “Smart Girls” for an album titled “Sweet Insanity” that he recorded between 1986-1991. You can see why this album never saw the light of day.

What are some of your least favorite songs from the 80’s?

Come On Eileen – I hate this song…

  2. Amy says:

Starship is the worst. I can’t believe any of them were ever in Jefferson Airplane. Some of the songs, however, I like purely for nostalgic reasons.

Get Outta My Dreams, Get into My Car – Billy Ocean

He gives us Bills a bad name!

  4. Cheryl says:

I don’t know, I think there was a serious miscast on Batman … looks like Prince could’ve given Jack a run for his money as the Joker!

  5. JohnL says:

    J. Geils Band has two I hate equally…..
    Freeze Frame and Centerfold

  6. Brian Head says:

I totally disagree about “The Lady in Red.” Most people I know loved that song. I think the rest of the list is dead on!

But you should replace the Chris De Burgh song with Bowie and Jagger “Dancing in the Street.” I know it’s a remake, but it’s so awful the video itself should be #1 worst video :)

  7. Brian Head says:

The comment I left above was for the Rolling Stone magazine list. Now the WTTS list is more accurate! …nice job!!

  8. Jan Krafft says:

I totally agree with Brian Head regarding “Lady in Read”. I’ve been married for many years, it is still a great turn-on for my husband and me to dance to. It has become our theme song! Rolling Stone magazine is way off on this one.

  9. Jan Krafft says:

Did I make a Freudian slip? I meant to type “Lady in Red”!

  10. chazwil says:

anything by reo speedwagon after 1979,gag!

  11. TomN says:

Europe was the absolute worst ever. What about Cherokee? A bunch of hair band boys from overseas singing about Native Americans. Really?

  12. Michael Euler says:

Puttin on the Ritz was always one of my favorites.
