How many entries are artists allowed for the contest?

  2. Brad says:

You may submit as many original entries as you like before the October 10 deadline. Good luck!

  3. Jordan says:

Out of the finalists selected, I’m sorry to say I’m a little disappointed. Don’t get me wrong. There are definitely some great designs in there, but there are also some that feature brushes that are most likely copyrighted, important information that goes outside the “live area” of the template, and text that is difficult to read. I don’t know the exact criterion on which these designs were selected, but they just aren’t as cover-worthy as some of the other submissions in my opinion.

Nonetheless, it was great seeing all the different designs that were submitted, and I hope you will do a similar thing in the years to come. Art, like music, is a powerful thing. It can be used to express emotion, to symbolize ideas, and to bring people from all walks of life together. The world wouldn’t be the same without it.

  4. Amber says:

The one by Monica Turner has clip art in it that we used at my work for a music-themed meeting last year. Tsk tsk…

I’m a big fan of the distressed two-color look that has become popular with designers. Matt Traughber has my vote.

  5. Jennifer says:

I must be missing something about how one can vote. When I click on the picture above, it opens a new window, and there is no “vote” button. I also don’t see a scroll bar to go through the entries. Please advise, I’d like to vote.

  6. I made the cut, and my work is all original, but I am both happy and surprised to be in, there are some great entries did not make it, one hand painted one especially I liked. I would take forever to pick 10 form the 200+ great entries.

Jennifer you vote by using the scroll bar in the box above and each one has a vote button bottom right.

    Thanks WTTS

  7. Brad says:

Hi folks – thanks for all of your tremendous feedback on the Collector’s Edition Cover Art contest. We love seeing the passion you have for music and art! There have been some questions about not being able to vote, and that some of the entries are “cut off.” It appears there is a rendering issue when viewing the page in Internet Explorer. There are NO problems when viewing in Firefox. We are working with the contest administrators in fixing this issue, as the “voting widget” was designed by them. We hope this is fixed shortly, but in the meantime, please view the page in Firefox and you should have no problem viewing and voting for your favorite. Thanks for listening to ‘TTS!

  8. No problems in Google Chrome either.

  9. Jean and Rick says:

    Love this!

  10. Dan says:

I think this is a great idea – instead of paying a designer to come up with a cover, let the listeners get involved and pay them instead with the prize, allowing the public to vote. Gets everyone involved and TTS comes out ahead. I like it. I think you should do this going forward in the coming years.

  11. brother john says:

Creative Allies is great! Even for someone like me that can’t afford the programs needed to produce vector files I can at least get my hand drawn artwork “out there” for folks to see. Congrats to the finalists!

  12. Cheryl says:

I really liked all of the creative covers that were designed and it was very hard to choose one! Its good to see so many wonderful artists out there willing to share their talents with the rest of us. Good luck to everyone who entered the contest.

  13. brother john I thought your artwork was superb, sorry it did not make it in, you made it to the editors picks on Creative Allies, well done!!

  14. Randy says:

These are all nice entries, but it is the Sun King Studio 92 now, right?
I don’t see Sun King included in any of the art.

  15. Matt Traughber says:

I’m thrilled to see two of my entries in the finals! I really had fun working on this project, I submitted another design that may have been my favorite of the three – go figure, it’s the one that doesn’t make the cut!

Jordan – you didn’t single any designs out, but like James did I’d also like to make clear that the elements (fonts, photos, textures) of my design are original and/or licensed for commercial use. I’d also say that the legibility of my vintage postcard style design is much better at full-size versus this thumbnail view. And nothing important outside of the live area! Thanks for your thoughtful comments, it’s really helpful to read criticism like yours and reconsider one’s design in its context.

Amber – thank you very much for your vote!

And finally, I’m campaigning HARD on social media, so hopefully my votes start rolling in, we’ll see. Good luck to all the finalists!

  16. Brad says:

We have fixed the rendering issues we had earlier with Internet Explorer. All should be good now… Thanks for all the votes and the great feedback!

  17. Lisa says:

I agree with Jordan, I am very disappointed in the “top ten”. there were so many great choice out there and this is what was picked. :(

  18. Jordan says:

James and Matt – your designs are all fine. I never doubted the originality of any of the content used.

It was really just one or two of the finalists that I felt really didn’t deserve to be in the top ten. But I suppose it comes down to a matter of opinion.

  19. Jordan Rader says:

I agree with your decision to choose Matt Traughber’s designs. Those are really nice and professional. I just can’t understand how you could choose that and then turn around and choose a few of those other monstrosities. Many of those are not only an affront to good aesthetics but downright copyright infringement. I even spotted the real artist’s signature in one of those covers! For shame WTTS!

  20. James Cormack says:

And in fairness to Matt, at least he admits he is going to campaign hard for votes, his designs are good enough without that BUT, this is why voting is such a bad idea, WTTS should decide on the cover as probably more than 50% of the votes will come from people who never woudl have visted here before or listened to WTTS. I may not have entered if I knew it was down to a public vote of non WTTS listeners. No biggie but food for thought the next time, WTTS no votes, choose the winner and don’t leave it open to vote spamming.

  21. Stephanie says:

I don’t think they should pick two from the same person even if they are good. It’s not fair to everyone that entered.

  22. Stephanie says:

I think it should have been one entry per person.

  23. brother john says:

    Thanks James!

  24. Farlow says:

Great Job Everyone!!!! I thought mine had a chance to make top 10….Zoe dog is sad…:(
always next year!! Please do this again!!!
Post Card Layout got my vote!!

  25. Matt Traughber says:

Almost a vote a minute for WDicken over the last hour! Whew! Don’t know how (s)he’s doing it, but now I’m sweating! You go to sleep with a big lead, feeling good, and wake up to this! Looks like I’ve got some more work to do. This is exciting!

  26. Wes Dicken says:

First of all, I am just glad to make the top ten. With all the talent on display…that really means alot to me.

Second of all,I, like you Matt, have also been campaigning pretty hard on social media. I was worried last night, but it seems that people are starting to check out the site. I agree with you…it certainly adds some suspense, because as of last night, I thought this was already over due to your high number of votes.

I do hate that it comes to a vote like this, though. Maybe WTTS should have only opened voting to Insiders and site members? Just a suggestion…

  27. Matt Traughber says:

Does anyone know how long the voting period lasts? I can’t seem to find an answer anywhere.

  28. craig says:

The contest will close Tuesday, October 18th at 5pm. Keep those votes coming through the weekend!

  29. James Cormack says:

Yes its very exciting to see artistic talent being thrown open to a spam off? May the best spammer win.

  30. Matt Traughber says:

Something weird is going on with the voting. First I get over a hundred votes in about an hour, then Wes gets about a hundred votes in the next hour. What’s happening? Are these vote tallies correct/reliable?

  31. Matt Traughber says:

James, your comment wasn’t posted when I wrote mine, but it looks like you’re right, and even though it seems like I’m benefiting from it, I’m disappointed. Without requiring some kind of login/registration, it seems the voting is too easy to manipulate. I haven’t asked or encouraged anyone to flood the voting on my behalf, but several people have mentioned how easy it is to cast multiple votes via various methods. Perhaps votes from the same MAC address (or something like that) can be filtered out (I’m no computer expert, does this sound possible?). I have campaigned very hard on facebook, and I know that several hundred of my votes are absolutely authentic. But a sudden jump of over 100 votes, by me and then by Wes? I agree, these can’t be distinct votes by different individuals in such short spans of time. I’ll be interested to hear if this will addressed, or if, as you said, it’s may the best spammer win. If it is, I don’t know if I’m that interested in winning anymore.

  32. Danelle says:

I am “DSmart1” (seriously, my last name is Smart) and I want to say how honored I am to be in the top 10! I am sorry that some of you feel that we all shouldn’t have made it, but to those of you who vote, thank you! I also want to say that the contest rules stated you must provide ownership of artwork, so if someone did plagiarize, they will probably be taken out of the running. Also, the painting with the artist’s signature, I am pretty sure that is original artwork that he signed, according to the description on Creative Allies. If I don’t win (which I am very behind at this point) I am going to stress votes for the postcard design. Of course I want the money, but I think I like this design even better than mine! Very clever. Good luck everyone!

  33. I am very happy I made it to TOP10. Thank you very much everyone who gave me the vote. Pity I didnt know about this link. I just found it today. Maybe it would look slightly different.
More luck next time. Honest congratulations to the winner! M.

  34. Belinda says:

I have to agree with Jordan and Lisa. I’m also disappointed, there were others I would have picked.

  35. Matt Traughber says:

Marquis – I had wondered if some of the finalists weren’t even aware of the fact that they had made the finals. I only knew by checking the site repeatedly myself. It’s unfortunate that each finalist wasn’t notified by email so that they’d each have had a chance to rally their base.

The voting has gotten ridiculous. I suddenly got a couple hundred votes in just a few minutes earlier, and then Wes got three hundred votes in the next few minutes! I have no idea what’s going on, but it looks a little hinky.

  36. Matt Traughber says:

Whoever wins this, somebody’s not going to be happy. And rightfully so. Nothing about the voting the last couple days looks right. And I’m saying that as somebody who has benefited from the craziness.

  37. WillS says:

As a professional designer, I’m disappointed by how this has been run. The format of this contest has NOTHING to do with the talent of the artists who’ve entered and EVERYTHING to do with popularity. But still a valuable lesson to learn – because it’s not always WHAT you know, it’s WHO you know. And tweeting it out or putting your link on Facebook is the way this contest was won and lost. It had absolutely nothing to do with whom did the “best” design – which is subjective anyway. WTTS staff should have chosen it.

  38. Cathy says:

Great design … a great addition to this release!

  39. Danelle says:

I agree the voting was weird. They need to check their site traffic and if there was less than 1,000 visits yesterday they’ll know something was up. Anywho, it doesn’t matter now. I am personally happy with the choice. Of course I wish it was me, but nontheless I really like the design. I hope they work out the kinks and do it again next year!

  40. Rebecca says:

Clever, clever, clever! Congrats Matt what a keen design!
