Though the Pitchfork Music Festival is dwarfed by larger festivals like Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo, it’s influence on the indie scene is undeniable. Since the festival began in 2006, it’s featured artists including Spoon, Band of Horses, Vampire Weekend, The Hold Steady, The Flaming Lips, Fleet Foxes, The National, Iron & Wine, Grizzly Bear, and Sonic Youth. Here’s a look back at Vampire Weekend performing in 2008:
This year’s festival is a three-day event taking place July 16th through 18th and featuring over 40 independent bands on three stages. The festival, with its eclectic mix of established and up-and-coming artists, brings between 35,000 – 48,000 music fans to Chicago’s Union Park each day. WTTS is sending Indy Underground producers, George Drake Jr. and Craig Shank, to the festival again this year to provide updates, photos, and interviews all weekend long. Many WTTS Indy Underground favorites are playing the festival, along with the debut of Pitchfork’s Comedy Stage. Here’s a short list of some of the acts featured at this year’s festival:
Bear in Heaven
Broken Social Scene
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
The Tallest Man on Earth
