Late last week, a YouTube video started making the rounds. In 1978, a St. Louis television station reported on the Rocky Horror Picture Show phenomenon with predictable results.
What makes the clip interesting is the young man dressed as Dr. Frank N. Furter around the 1:25 mark. Under the makeup…and all the hair…it’s Michael Stipe. The R.E.M. frontman lived outside St. Louis in the late 70s before leaving for Athens, Georgia to study art and become a key member of one of the most influential music scenes of the 80s.
