Two songwriters used to write together, trading songs on the front porch in Texas in the early eighties. Both gifted lyricists with a sense of the off-kilter, one of them went a little more mainstream, beloved by millions, the other with smaller numbers but a hugely devoted fanbase. One you know as Lyle Lovett, the other is Robert Earl Keen. Robert’s latest album is called The Rose Hotel, and we’ll dip into it a little deeper this week on OVEREASY.
Robert Earl Keen on Austin City Limits:

Really enjoy your show, in fact is the only show on FM in Indy that is enjoyable. The rest, including other shows on WTTS, use the same formula for music. How many times do we need to hear bob seeger and JCM?
Anyway, we tune in every sunday morning. Right now you are playing a less known Steely Dan tune, excellent choice.
Rell in love with Robert Earl King while working down in Texas where he is almost a god. Since you mentioned the front porch one of REK top songs is “the front Porch song: written with lyle out on their porch while at Texas A&M in College Station Texas. The live version explains it all.

@sehaare:
Agreed. Such a great songwriter that never gets any credit for a solid body of work.
@zman:
Thanks for the good words! I like having people aboard for the show that are active listeners, that enjoy what’s there and enjoy using the show as part of a sense of ritual on Sundays. Back before I hosted the show and was just a listener, it was a mimosa, coffee, a journal, and breakfast from a deli a few blocks away – and now I’ve done this show for almost a decade, and love it as much now as I did when I first guest-hosted in the late 1990s. A toast to you and yours.
