WTTS Indy Underground — May 10, 2010

Want to play musical connect the dots?  See if you can keep up:

It seems all the rage right now to be in, start (or even dream up your very own) musical super-group.  With bands like Chickenfoot (Sammy HagarMichael AnthonyJoe Satriani and Chad Smith), Them Crooked Vultures (Dave Grohl, John Paul Jones and Josh Homme) and Broken Bells (James Mercer and Danger Mouse), it only makes sense to feature one of the original super groups — Broken Social Scene (Kevin Drew, Emily Haines, Leslie Feist, Jason Collett, Torquil Campbell and the list goes on and on and on…).  Their latest Forgiveness Rock Record hit stores last Tuesday, and Indy Underground will feature another track off the album.

In the same vein, Jack White is also a man who has his hand churning many different projects such as The White StripesThe Raconteurs and his most recent one The Dead Weather.  Featuring himself (on drums!) Alison Mosshart of The Kills, Jack Lawrence of The Raconteurs and Dean Fertita (who has worked with The Raconteurs and Brendan Benson (of The Raconteurs) and also with Queens Of The Stoneage (see: Josh Homme; above)).

Confused yet?  Hope not, because there’s more.

Montreal’s Wolf Parade is back with their third album Expo 86 set to be released in late June.  Spencer Krug is the brains behind the project and the same goes for his other current band Sunset Rubdown.  He’s also in Swan Lake (another super-group containing Daniel Bejar (of Destroyer and Hello, Blues Roses) as well as members of Frog Eyes (also of Blackout Beach), and The New Pornogrpahers (which is a bit of a super-group in itself, but that’s for another day).

If you’re keeping track, we’ve listed THREE bands to be featured on tonight’s edition of Indy Underground, and branching off from them is SEVENTEEN different artists and/or bands.  Woah.

Dizzy?  Soon the world may look like this:

I wasn’t aware of the connect the dots but I did this recently on my own for my brothers’ golf trip. Laid up from knee surgery, I took bands, artists and fun facts and connected them through rock and roll history beginning with my birth year, 1959. (ok, I’m old) But not like the 3rd Degree.
Many of the facts I had learned from WTTS, especially the one where I got this idea. I think it was Todd who pointed out that Jay Ferguson (“Thunder Island” fame) was a lead singer for Spirit. He sang lead on “Mr. Skin” but not on “I Got a Line On You.” It was fun.

    Thanks Craig!

Outstanding edition of Indy Underground this week! In line w/ Broken Social Scene, I’d love to hear WTTS playing some Metric, for whom I’m so happy since they landed the opening honors for Muse this fall!

    Anthony: Don’t mention it!

Todd: We’ve featured Metric in the past and will likely do so again in the future. Did you see that they’ll be on the new Twilight soundtrack along with Muse, Beck, Vampire Weekend, and Band of Horses?
